Class description: There are lots of good reasons contractors should partner with sub contractors to help them specify and complete construction projects. However, if you do not understand the legal differences between employees and subs, or your business uses the wrong subs, the consequences can compromise your profits and even put you out of business.

Learning Objectives: By completing this class you will:

  • Understand the difference between an employee and an independent contractor.
  • Be able to choose and create mutually beneficial relationships with the right sub contractors for your business.
  • Know how working with subs affects your business legally and financially.

 

“Safe Business Practices for Contractors and Those Seeking To Start a Business”

Credit Category: This is a two hour course with two credits, one credit in the Workplace Safety category and one credit in the Business Practices category.

Class description: Construction businesses and workers are often exposed to the greatest risks during the design and construction of projects. Risks can come from a wide variety of considerations and requirements including employment laws, worker safety and protection, building codes, building science and building performance. Insurance coverage can help but how you do business in these areas can often offer more effective and less expensive protection for the business as well as its employees.

Everything else you do at your construction business may not matter in the long run if your business is not financially healthy and protected from operational risks. Making money is important, but you can be making money building and still go out of business. Creating and operating a financially safe contracting business includes the ability to predict and measure sales, costs, expenses and profits in a timely and accurate manner.

Learning Objectives: By completing this class you will:

  • Learn about developing a safety culture at your business
  • Learn the five biggest financial mistake contractors make
  • Learn important considerations for setting up and maintaining a financial system
  • Discover the must have financial reports you need to monitor financial health and safety at your contracting business.

“Basic Construction Details for Decks, Porches and Stairways”

Class description: Deck and balcony failures have been in the news all too often recently. Proper design, construction detailing and weather protection are all important considerations when building a deck to meet safety and code requirements. This class provides a basic overview of important construction and building code considerations for project estimators and construction personnel building decks, porches and stairs

Learning Objectives: By completing this class you will:

  • Learn several reasons deck failure happens and how to prevent them.
  • Learn about basic deck framing methods and considerations.
  • Learn about ledgers, framing, and post fastening methods as well as common fastener materials available.
  • Learn about deck guard rail requirements and construction methods.

 


Estimating, Pricing and Producing Successful Construction Projects

Course Description:

Estimating construction projects

 This interactive workshop will introduce you and your business to the critical information needed to make sure you are properly estimating and pricing your projects for profitability.  It will also include strategies you can use to successfully delegate construction projects to production employees so they can profitably complete projects on their own with the information created during the sales and estimating process.

Being strategic about the process you use to collect and document project information when selling to customers and estimating project costs can really make a big difference for your business.  

Done right, the estimating process can:

  • Make more money as a contractorHelp you sell
  • Help you sell at higher margins
  • Provide production staff the information they need
  • Make project scheduling much easier
  • Help protect planned profits while producing those projects. 
  • Improve project quality and customer satisfaction

Learning Objectives: By completing this class you will:

  • Determine the markup your business needs to use when pricing projects to ensure your ability to cover project and overhead expenses and maintain planned net profit.
  • Contractor markupUnderstand how to determine your company’s gross profit margin requirement and how sales volume and gross profit margins are interdependent.
  • Know the difference between cash and accrual accounting and which one to use for your business.
  • Understand and use a variety of options for better managing cash flow.
  • Take advantage of many benefits that can come from strategic estimating.
  • Use your estimate to help create project payment schedules that improve your cash flow and give your customer confidence about making payments.
  • Create proposals that help you sell, differentiate your business, protect profits and manage customer expectations.
  • Use your sales process and your proposal to help improve production results and profits.
  • Make sure your team has what they need to install/build projects profitably and on their own.
  • Take advantage of the Pre-Staging of projects.
  • Learn what a preconstruction meeting is, how to do one and how it can help you make more money and get more referrals
  • Learn what a Quality Control Precompletion Meeting is, how to do one and how it can help eliminate the Punch List and help you collect your final payment
